Nevers Mumba’s Belly and the MMD – The Limits of Greed

Nevers Mumba has just delivered MMD to UPND and this is unsurprising to many. We have no issues with how Nevers chooses to survive, and how is belly moves. What we rather find interesting is that Nevers fought to be a President for MMD, but without any vision. We say this because ever since Nevers scattered his friends and assumed the leadership of the MMD party, he has done more with the ruling party than with opposition leaders. One cannot tell who Nevers Mumba is, where he is coming from and where he is going.

You see in a world driven by competition and ambition, the notion of not fighting for what we desire might seem counterintuitive. However, the philosophy that “what is yours will always be yours” offers a profound perspective on life, emphasizing trust in the natural course of events and the importance of inner peace. At its core, this philosophy encourages us to believe in the inevitability of our destiny. It suggests that the universe has a way of aligning circumstances in our favour, bringing us what we truly need and deserve without the need for constant struggle. This doesn’t imply passivity or lack of effort; rather, it advocates for a balanced approach where we put in our best efforts but remain detached from the outcome.

We assume that even without being a politician, Nevers wanted the MMD party to himself. He was not contented and gratified to see MMD run from a distance. It looked easy to run the party, and he wanted it to himself. Once in his hands, Nevers was lost, never looked comfortable and was out of depth. He never knew or understood anything required to run and sustain the party. His greed caught up with him, and he cannot sustain the party he so much wanted anymore. The truth is that Nevers never had any vision for MMD or for the country. He is on record accusing UPND to be a regional party, raising questions about regionalism. What has changed? Why has Nevers ignored his previous accusations? Truth is that probably nothing has changed out there but that Nevers wants to survive – and survive he must.

We believe that Never’s belly is not alone. Nevers is reflective of the wider political crisis facing our country. Truth be told – Zambia now lacks bold men and women who can stand on values that can transform the country. In Many cases, many people like Nevers prance around in suits pretending to be well meaning but the reality is that they have no visions for themselves and the organisations they lead. If there is anything to learn from Nevers Mumba is that never fight for things you cannot handle. Nevers knows that he has failed. We think the right thing to do was resign and allow fresh leadership to emerge, but Nevers will never allow that. And his decision to deliver the MMD to UPND is unsurprising, but instructive. That is Nevers for you – with ‘more hats than cattle.’
